DFI GISBORNE | Day 5
DEVICES 101
There is a very well thought out (and tested) processes in place for implementing and using devices for kids/teachers working in Manaiakalani. They are getting devices and apps that will increase engagement and reduce confusion. Explain everything was awesome!
The focus needs to remain on learning and not app-ing which something that has really changed my perspective on using iPads in the classroom. When you have a centralised means of learning, creating and sharing, you provide scaffolding and consistency for kids and their learning. Less thinking about 'choices' and more thinking about the learning involved!
I tried to use a different screencasting tool (Screencastify) to add to my kete of new knowledge and ways of sharing learning. Had a great time exploring smart learner lessons relating to 'Digital Footprints'. My collaborative buddy and I spent time exploring and learning about using Screencastify. Our learning is HERE. At this stage I think I would prefer Loom for it's ease of use and round picture. I'm blessed? with a mind that cares about aesthetics!
I am very interested in using explain everything with my kids to see if I can get them to explain their learning and thinking better. Lot of valuable learning that is applicable at work and at home. Loving DFI time! :)

Sounds like we are managing to provoke new ideas and thinking even for someone who is already super digitally fluent (such as you :)
ReplyDeleteLike you, I have preferred screen recording apps that are my go-to. The key here is that screencastify is 'bread and butter' for learners with Chromebooks. It is an app we can provision with no extra sign in required, with the outcomes stored in their Drive, visible on Teacher Dashboard etc etc. In our schools many of our learners would jump on a classroom iMac and use Quicktime to do a screen recording, then upload it to their Drive for future use. But that is a luxury not all our learners have. The Adobe option is great too, but the free version requires a bit more work around for teachers and kids.
Thanks for supporting others in your group throughout the day.
Thank you for the comment Dorothy. This course has been great for increasing my understanding of TMP kaupapa and like you say helps to provoke new ideas and thinking. I agree that Screencastify needs to be the bread and butter for learners - really like the idea of videos automatically ending up in drive too! Had a great discussion with a teacher this week about the difference between Loom and Screencastify... and could easily do so because I have used both tools and know the benefits of each.
DeleteKia ora Herman,
ReplyDeleteGreat to see you are making connections and managing to integrate personal and work learning. Love it.
I think you are definitely blessed re your aesthetics - it definitely has it's place.
Would love to see your Explain everything creation too. Hint, hint!
Ngā mihi,
Maria
Thank you for the comment Maria. Will need to make a new one... due to temporarily losing my evidence on a permanent basis. I think my understanding of the tool is now at a level where I can create a new animation. Will let you know when I have updated this post.
DeleteHi Herman, I second Maria's hint! And Dorothy's comment about supporting others. Great video tutorial of you and Susanne collaborating. I agree on the aesthetics front too, but as Dorothy said it's important for us to know about the tools our learners are expected to use.
ReplyDeleteWould be great to see some of your kids explain everythings too!
