DFI GISBORNE | Day 8

Empowered

Empowered learners know that the device in front of them is a tool used to explore, learn, expand and engage them in everyday learning and life. The 'Learn, Create, Share' kaupapa creates opportunities for learners to be empowered to create and to be creative. Today was an excellent example of how creativity can get learners excited about learning - empowering them to make the most of learning opportunity!

We explored well-designed learning experiences to help us develop a deeper understanding of computational thinking element of the Digital Technologies Curriculum and the powerful learning that our devices could offer us.

The process for learning about computational thinking went from a physical problem solving challenges to basic animation using co-spaces to very cool logical problem solving using code and computational thinking. Very fun!

This was our creation using the words "Snowman, heart and collaboration." More projects to come! Watch this space...

  1. Kia Ora Herman, I enjoyed your CoSpaces animation. You're right so much problem solving skills can be learnt with coding. And skills like resilience, patience, perseverance... all such important soft skills. Coding provides a great context to learn those skills in an engaging way.

  2. Kia ora Herman,
Glad it was very fun. You are modelling being an empowered learner - go you.
Love your waving snowman. I finally realised I should click on him to make something happen. Perhaps you could add an instruction to go with the animation.
    Ngā mihi,

  3. Love that you embedded this here. More fun and learning. Makes me realise how powerful it is to have a solid learning buddy to stay the course with. Wonder how this could be best fostered in classrooms too. Thanks for teaching me more about coding!

    1. Thank you for the kind comment Daniel. Have you used Co-spaces in class since learning about the tool at your STEM Tech sessions? Would be a cool 'must-do' to publish a creative writing story!

    1. Kia ora Max. Thank you for the kind and thoughtful comment. I will ensure that when I use you as one of my characters that I will give you credit within the rangitaki post. Have you been able to embed any of your Co space activities from STEM Tech sessions? Would be an interesting 'must-do' to complete! Lekker dag, Mr4E.

    1. Thank you for the kind, helpful and thoughtful comment Ryan. I must admit that the Evil snowman was fun to create and a bit terrifying to hear my voice afterwards! I agree that more game interactions would make this more interesting. This will be something I take into consideration when I create my next Co space. Lekker dag, Mr4E.

    1. Thank you for the kind and thoughtful comment Wilf. It was a fun experience creating this Co space. I worked collaboratively with another teacher to construct and design it. Have you used Co spaces yet? It would be cool to see some posts about what you are learning in Stem Tech! Lekker dag, Mr4E
